- Bring along a magazine clipping
and/or an article of clothing from
your closet that best represents
your ideal New York wedding gown.
- After you try on your gown, ask
your consultant if you can be
excused for a minute. Whether you
are in the hub of New York City,
or in the more mellow throes of
Rockland and Westchester
County, choosing the right dress
is stressful business. Once you are
excused, do a quick walk-through of
the gown shop. Scan the racks
for any potentially suitable dress
you or your consultant overlooked.
Recall that because consultants only
have one hour to get a feel for the
right gown. This time you
take to prowl the racks gives you
time to meditate on your decision
and to ensure no good gown in
left behind!
- Be sure to shop within your
means. Be a strictly budgeting
New York bride. If you visit a
salon whose average gown runs
6,000 on your 2,000 dollar budget,
the only one paying will be you!
- Bring family and/or friends
along. A second opinion is always
good to have. Plus, having the
right, honest loved ones around on
your gown-shopping excursion
makes things more fun...whether
you're roaming the streets of New
York City, or through the quaint
plazas in Westchester.
- Be sure to order your gown
six months to a year before the
Big Day. Whether you are in New York
City or Connecticut, you will face
an a.m. rush order, then paying 5-10
percent more.
- Get a swatch of your dress
fabric. Your florist, shoe dyer,
and caterer will love you for
it.
- Make sure that you bring your
shoes to each fitting.
- Inquire into cover-ups if you
are wearing a
sleeveless/strapless dress,
particularly if you are tying the
knot during the summer or in a
church. You cannot go wrong with a
flowing coat, or a fur-trimmed wrap.
However, you must act fast if you
want to wrap yourself--your
seamstress will throw away the
trimmings from your train unless you
ask her to save them right away.
These bits of fabric are essential
in matching your wrap's trim with
your train.
- Keep track of your favorite
items while in the salon.
Most salons will equip you
with a list of each of your
preferred dresses' price,
name brand, and accessories which
comes with the gown.
